Where ChargeAlong's charger data comes from

13 September 2026 · 3 minute read

ChargeAlong does not run chargers, and is not affiliated with any charging network. Everything about a charging site comes from open data, and every site page links to the record it was taken from.

Open Charge Map

Charging sites come from Open Charge Map, a global register of charging locations kept by drivers, charging networks and public datasets. Its data is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, which is why each page credits it.

Refreshed every week

Once a week ChargeAlong reads Open Charge Map's public export for the countries it covers. New sites appear, changed sites are updated, and a site the export no longer lists is marked as removed. A removed site keeps its page, which says so and points to the nearest alternatives.

A site's address in ChargeAlong's URLs never changes when its details do, so a link you saved keeps working.

What we leave out

  • Chargers marked as private or restricted, such as one in someone's garage.
  • Records whose data provider does not allow reuse beyond non commercial purposes.
  • Records not yet approved on Open Charge Map.
  • Comments and photos, which belong to the people who posted them.

Prices

Where a record includes a price, the site page shows it exactly as published, and beside it a plain summary when the numbers are clear, such as a price per kWh. ChargeAlong never guesses a price. Prices and access change often, so check with the operator, usually in their app, before you rely on a charger.

Correcting a record

If something on a site page is wrong, the best fix is at the source: follow the link to its Open Charge Map record and suggest an edit there. That corrects it for everyone who uses the data, and ChargeAlong picks up the change in its next weekly refresh.

Places and maps

Countries, regions, towns and postcodes come from GeoNames, under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. Maps are drawn from OpenStreetMap data, under the Open Database Licence.
