Charging speeds

Every site is sorted by its fastest plug. How long a stop takes depends on your car as much as the charger.

AC
Up to 22 kW, from a post or a wall box, though most cars take 7 to 11 kW this way. Best where you stay a few hours: at work, the shops or overnight.

Plugs

Which plug you need depends on your car, and on where it was sold.

CCS2
Fast DC charging in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Europe. Most new cars there use it.
Type 2
AC charging in the same countries. Many posts are a socket only, so carry your own cable.
CHAdeMO
An older DC plug, mainly on earlier Nissan Leafs and Mitsubishi Outlander plug in hybrids.
NACS (Tesla)
Tesla's plug, now the standard for new cars in the US and Canada.
CCS1 and Type 1
DC and AC charging for most other cars in the US and Canada.

Planning a trip

A long drive in an electric car is a rhythm of stops, and the planner picks them for you.

Range is a rhythm
300 to 400 km of real range is a stop every two to three hours, which is the break most people take anyway.
Charger to charger
Give the planner a start, a destination and your car, and it picks every stop and says how long each takes.
Into your maps app
Open the whole trip in Google Maps, or each stop in Apple Maps, and drive it with CarPlay or Android Auto.

Choosing a car

The range on the badge is the number that matters least. Here is what to look at instead.

Real range
Plan on 70 to 80% of the rated figure on a highway or in the cold, and on that being plenty.
Charging speed
The time from 10% to 80% and the shape of the charging curve, not the peak power on the brochure.
Compare two cars
The comparison tool puts any two side by side, with both charging curves on one chart.

Where this comes from

Charging sites come from Open Charge Map, an open register kept by drivers and charging networks, and are refreshed every week. Each site page links to its record. Prices and access change, so check with the operator before you rely on a charger.
